Y1 English Plan Autumn Term 2019-2020

Autumn Term Overview:

Our first topic that we explored was ‘Water’ and we started off by asking the children ‘what do you already know?’ From this we then began exploring the children’s understanding and building on their current knowledge. We studied the poem ‘Splish, Splash, Splosh’ and recited it off by heart so that we could perform it; the children then created and wrote their own verse which they practiced and performed. In geography, we learnt about different bodies of water mentioned in the poem (e.g. oceans, rivers etc.) and linked our learning in maths to capacity, where children learnt about measuring using ml’s. In science, the children learnt about sinking/floating and about materials, where they investigated the properties carrying out experiments. We went to the Sea Life Centre to deepen our knowledge and understanding, and when we returned back to school the children planned and wrote a re-count about their trip. In I.T. they used the laptops to research information about different sea creatures. In art, they learnt the skill of sketching so they could sketch their favourite sea-life creature from the trip… ‘Nemo’ the clown fish! In R.E. they have learnt about different festivals and celebrations; as well as learning about the history and reason of these celebrations, the children used their D.T. skills to plan and design products such as; poppies, sweets and their packaging, wreaths and baubles.

Trips and Learning Outside the Classroom

PE Multiskills at Easton College 2020

The children participated in a range of activities that allowed them to practice and develop a range of skills such as throwing and catching. These skills help develop the foundation for sport specific skills in the future. The festival also aimed to encourage pupils to be physically active in the future. The children really enjoyed their time and worked well as a team. Well done to Elise, Charlie, Ashton and Roscoe who won the awards given out on the day!

Norwich Castle Museum 2020

Year 1 Walk and Visit to Norwich Castle and Museum The Year 1's had a lovely time walking through Norwich and visiting the Castle and the Museum. They got to find out lots about different buildings and Norwich's history, which they have taken back to the classroom to continue their learning. After they returned, they received a special delivery 'from Norwich Castle'. So far, they have read and explored the story. Next week they will be using it to inspire their writing.

Sea Life Centre 2019

The Year 1 children went on their school trip to the Sea Life Centre, to continue their topic learning about water.

The children got to see lots of different sea life creatures; and even got to experience touching a starfish, and got to watch the stingrays being fed. I think Otto summed up the trip for everyone "I want to go again, it was awesome.""

A HUGE thank you to all of the parent helpers that came on the Year 1 trip.
