HLTA - SEND Internal Alternative Provision Lead

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to lead our Internal Alternative Provision (CALM) for a small group of children with complex Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). This role is ideal for an individual with extensive experience supporting children with SEND needs, who is passionate about fostering personal growth, learning, and achieving individual goals.

As the HLTA for our Internal Alternative Provision, you will work closely with two full-time Teaching Assistants to support a small group of children in a nurturing, structured, and inclusive environment. Your primary focus will be to deliver tailored learning activities and interventions, ensuring that each child’s individual needs and targets are met effectively.

You will be fully supported by the SENDCo and external specialists, who will provide guidance and oversight. Additionally, training opportunities will be available to ensure your continued professional development.

• Experience: Extensive experience in supporting children with SEND, delivering speech and language interventions, particularly those with complex needs. Experience in a similar role, such as HLTA or SEND Teaching Assistant is essential.

• Skills: Strong ability to lead and adapt learning activities to meet individual needs. Excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills are essential.

• Nurturing Approach: A compassionate, patient, and nurturing personality, with the ability to build strong, trusting relationships with children, colleagues and parents.

• Understanding of SEND: A solid understanding of the range of SEND, including social, emotional, and mental health needs, and strategies to support children in achieving their full potential.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and Support: Lead and support the Internal Alternative Provision (IAP), ensuring a safe, structured, and positive environment for a small group of children with complex SEND needs.

• Plan and Deliver Activities: Follow long term plans devised by the SENDCo, leading carpet sessions, structured activities, and interventions tailored to the children’s individual needs and targets.

• Track Development: Monitor and track the progress and development of each child, keeping detailed records and providing regular updates to the SENDCo.

• Support Personal Growth: Provide emotional and social support to children, helping them build their confidence, independence, and resilience in their learning journey.

• Collaborate with Colleagues: Work collaboratively with the Teaching Assistant to ensure effective support, implementing strategies to meet the children’s individual targets.

• Environment Setup: Prepare and organise the learning environment daily, ensuring it is stimulating, supportive, and conducive to the children’s needs.

• Liaise with External Specialists: Work closely with external specialists to implement tailored interventions and strategies for children with specific complex needs.

We require a CALM lead to have really good communication skills, a welcoming and friendly approach with a high level of professionalism, while being able to relate well to both children and adults. This is an important post in the school and we want a reliable, well organised, adaptable, caring person with, most importantly, a sense of humour. We would prefer to appoint an experienced Teaching Assistant/support worker or a graduate with good standards of literacy, numeracy and computing skills, with an understanding of the National Curriculum to help move children’s learning forward if issues are found.
